John grew up in the Houston, Texas suburb of Missouri City. From an early age, John spent his weekends and summers working alongside his grandmother in her residential rental and real estate investment business which included properties in Houston, Texas, Lubbock, Texas, and Ruidoso, New Mexico. Through this experience, he developed a strong work ethic and a wealth of hard and soft skills.
John attended Texas Tech University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in finance, a real estate specialization. While attending college John continued working with his grandmother during the summers and managed her Lubbock, Texas rental properties during the school year. He also began building his own portfolio of rental properties. After graduating from college, John obtained his Texas Real Estate Sales Agent License. However, before his career as a sales agent began, a chance encounter at a garage sale launched him into a 31-year career in the oil industry.
John’s first job was with Marathon Oil Company as a division order analyst. Other roles during his 11 years with Marathon included marketing analyst and crude oil scheduler. His oil industry career also included 5 years with Plains Marketing as a crude oil scheduler and 15 years with Sunoco Logistics. John began his career with Sunoco as their only crude oil scheduler and then quickly became their only crude oil trader. His contributions to the success and growth of the organization ultimately led him to be Vice President of Crude Trading and Scheduling, managing a team of 5 traders and 5 schedulers. While working in the oil industry, John obtained his Texas Real Estate Broker License and kept it active, using it primarily for his own buying, selling, and leasing.
